ugh...

Posted : 17 years ago on 14 April 2007 04:13 (A review of Freedom Writers)

not ANOTHER movie about a white teacher who teaches in an urban school and teaches the black kids how they could improve themselves.

first of all, this film has been done 500 times before.

second of all, the only white teachers you'll find in REAL LIFE urban schools are the ones doing their undergrads in there, and once they graduate, they will run as fast as they can to the private schools.

just what is hollywood trying to do? do they think if they repeat the same plot and 'moral story' over and over, that eventually, it will transform society? or is it all just to ease our conscience?

actually quite descent

Posted : 17 years ago on 12 April 2007 04:53 (A review of Flyboys )

This fictional WW1 dogfighting movie is 'loosely' based on the the Lafayette Escadrille squadraon, a French squadron that consisted of of American fighter pilots. And its true that casualities were heavy, but also true that did a lot of kills themselves, with 11 of them becoming aces. The 'loose' part is that the characters portrayed in the film are not based on any specific individuals. For example, the black pilot never was in Lafayette, although he was american and joined another french squadron, and after US entered WW1, he was barred from flying because he was black. So although he was never in this US squadron, I can see why writers of this film decided to lump him in, to tell a few historic stories all in one film withouth going into too much detail.

And even though the aerial dogfights were obviously 100% CGI, and some of the moves the made were too sudden, too fast, and not how a biplane would react, it still was a great blast to watch. Even the love story between the rookie US ace and a french country girl was at least bearable to watch, unlike the crap love triangle forced down our throats in 'Pearl Harbour'.

The reason I knocked it down a few to a 7/10 rating is pretty much all the stories were so scripted, it has a definitive 'Hollywood' stench to it. Case in point, the rich kid who refused to bunk up with the 'negro' pilot. and later in movie, when the black guy saves the rich kid's life, you get the mandatory 'forgiveness' scene as he offers up his expensive 100 year old booze bottle to his new black friend. awwwwwwww. how cute... and utterly predictable. And this gets repeated over and over between every characters that has a beef or grievance with some other character. There was also one unbelievably bad acting part, where the actor who portrays the black pilot speak little english at beginning of film (native tongue was supposed to be French) and yet later on, he's in the barracks talking like a brotha from da hood, g!

Overall, a great popcorn flick, and I think the main reason I liked this film despite its flaws is the subject, ww1 dogfighting, has never been done to this extent before, and it reminded me of all the times i played 'Red Baron' video game as a kid. Heck, they even had a Zeppelin raid! sweet...

note: this obviously isn't a review, but an example of how great and useful a 'links' section would be for item profile pages here at Listal. We can add photos, videos, edit titles and descriptions, but we're seriously missing valuable links to external sites for trivia, reviews, stores, fansites, and encyclopedias.

A great classic, but...

Posted : 17 years ago on 9 April 2007 08:26 (A review of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom)

A great classic, but 'Temple of Doom' is my least-favorite of the Indiana Jones trilogy. Still, the good parts (gross bugs, action-adventure with comic twists, eating monkey brains, wild ride thru mine shafts on rail carts, and the bridge over crocodile-infested rivers) clash with many bad parts of the movie (highly annoying sidekick, even more annoying 'love interest', and most importantly, the lack of nazis).

very funny crime-mystery-comedy

Posted : 17 years ago on 9 April 2007 04:08 (A review of Once Upon a Crime...)

I forget the name of this film (first saw it on TV) but now that I know, i'm going out and buying the DVD first chance i get. I dont care what critics say, i dont care about rating of it, and i dont care about the fact that Eugene Levy directed it. This movie is etched hard into my brain, as it has a ton of memorable and hilarious lines. It's a great sunday escapism comedy that everyone will love. Go check it out.

I still remember the part where Belushi tries to get $5 chips at the casino, and the annoyed cashier (played by Levy) rolls his eyes, blows dust off a box, and makes a comment about how they use these at the 'children's casino'. LOL

and a warning, its filled with cheesy one-liners and puns, but thats part of the beauty of this film. If you find jokes such as 'Are you finished?' 'No I'm not. Are you swedish?' lame, you may want to pass on this one. :)

The original 'Raunchy Teen Sex' comedy

Posted : 17 years ago on 9 April 2007 03:37 (A review of Porky's)

Ages before 'American Pie', heck, even before the classics such as 'Revenge of the Nerds' and 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High', the true original teenage raunchy sex comedy was born with the release of Porky's in 1982.

This Canadian-made film follows a group of sex-starved teenage boys who make it a mission to get into the ultimate strip club: Porky's. A true classic.

Best Film Ever

Posted : 17 years, 1 month ago on 7 April 2007 03:16 (A review of The Shawshank Redemption)

Not a single review for this one? I'm shocked.

It's number 1 IMDB (ignore the fact that Godfather, which has less votes and lower IMDB score is still holding #1 spot for past year, Shawshank is the TRUE number 1 IMDB movie). And the highest rated popular movie on here as well.

But i guess a movie like this doesn't really need reviews; it's absolutely perfect, and if you haven't seen it yet, you owe it to yourself to make sure it's the next film you watch, no exceptions allowed. I think why this movie will likely always remain at number 1 spot is that it appeals to all people, young & old, male & female.

funny AND sexy

Posted : 17 years, 1 month ago on 7 April 2007 01:53 (A review of I Am a Sex Addict)

Very original and funny auto-biographical mockumentary film about one man's addiction to sex. This film has lots of nudity, but the sex is left to the imagination (i.e. its not a soft-core porn). Caveh is brilliant and absolutely hilarious. I can't wait to see what else this upstart filmmaker can do.

Simply incredible

Posted : 17 years, 1 month ago on 7 April 2007 01:29 (A review of The Edukators)

About 15 minutes in, I didn't even realize the movie was in German and that I was reading subtitles. The story just sucks you right in, and by the half-way mark, you find yourself at the edge of the seat, anticipating every next scene in the film. Daniel and Julia are two of the finest young actors out there there right now, not just in Germany but the world. Daniel is from 'Goodbye Lenin' fame and Julia was incredible in this film as well as Sophie Scholl, and has a certain girl-next-door beauty that no one in Hollywood can seem to match.

The plot may sound a bit corny, a group of rebels break into rich people's homes and re-arrange their furniture and other objects, but once the reasoning behind it is given, it all makes sense and the audience is right with them in their 'cause'. And when things go very wrong in one operation, you find yourself trying to think ahead to how they can get out of the mess they got into, because you honestly feel sympathy for the gang 'The Edukators'. Add in a kidnapping, a love triangle story, and strong anti-corporate anti-wealth morals and you have yourself world-class cinema magic.

Eastwood is GOD

Posted : 17 years, 1 month ago on 26 March 2007 11:57 (A review of Letters from Iwo Jima)

Incredibly beautiful, powerful, brutal and emotional movie. Just saw it this weekend, and unless its a shell-shock effect, I'll go on record now to say it is the best World War 2 movie ever filmed. Spielberg needs to take a cue from Eastwood to see how to properly make a war film. There is no better way to show the true horrors of war than by showing BOTH sides of the conflict. In Saving Private Ryan, the only bit of interaction there was with the Nazis was when they let one go, and that same one re-appeared later and got his revenge. Moral of that movie: never trust a Nazi. Pure propaganda crap. I mean, The Pianist even showed the good side of one Nazi officer, and it was a Holocaust movie filmed by a Jewish director.

After seeing Iwo Jima (I didn't see Flags of Fathers yet), you get to see Japanese soldiers that are full of rage and suicidal as well as ones that had compassion and were hoping for survival. And you even saw the American soldiers who were fair and just, as well as one who were arrogant and murderous. There is no 'good guys' and 'bad guys' in this movie. Its about the millions of men who were thrown into the path of an unstoppable conflict and just did the best they could to cope with it.

I hope to see Flags of Our Fathers soon, and I hope they stuck to a similar formula used in Iwo Jima.
